protests
in april 2018, nicaragua's president announced that he was cutting social security benefits. being the second poorest country in latin america, this angered many civilians. protests erupted the day after the announcement and dozens of people were injured and killed within the first couple days. fsln (sandinista liberation front or frente sandinista de LiberaciĆ³n nacional) paramilitary groups were deployed by the president to retaliate against the protestors. as these protests continue, thousands have been injured and hundreds have been killed including journalists and reporters, some of which have been caught killed on camera. universities are used by students for blockades and counter paramilitary groups have formed to fight against the government
coronavirus
with high poverty rates, a dictatorship, and daily protests, covid-19 has hit nicaragua really hard. hospitals are not allowed to report a majority of cases. currently reported, there are 4,494 cases and 137 deaths. according to my family who live down there, many people on their street alone have caught it and half of them have died. the president and vice president have not enforced a quarantine and denying the virus is happening.
how you can help
UNFORTUNATELY, PETITIONS DO NOT WORK WITH A DICTATORSHIP, HOWEVER there are places to donate or even just to spread information. i will be linking threads from twitter in the icons below
#sosnicaragua has been a tag on both twitter and Instagram since the first protests erupted in 2018. please do not hesitate to check out the hashtags and use it to spread new information if you find anything new.
